South African Masters Athletics Championship Results
Many outstanding performances were the order of the day, at
the recent S.A. Masters Athletics Championships in Oudtshoorn on 26 & 27 April. The ladies in particular, had a very good
weekend.
Wellknown sprint star and former Olympian, Adri
Schoeman, has made a welcome return to
the track. She won the sprint events
comfortably with excellent times of 12.28 in the 100m and 24.72 in the 200m and
in so doing, ran the best sprint times of all age groups. She also holds 2 S.A. Records with times of
11.95 and 24.46 to her credit since returning to the track. In 2012 she was ranked 2nd in
the 100m and 1st in the 200m in the world for W.40.
Adri should be a strong contender to take the sprint double at the World Masters Athletics Championships later this year in Porto Alegra, Brazil, if she decides to participate. https://wma2013.com/en/
The evergreen Christie du Plooy (82) excelled once more in the 100m, 200m & 400 m with times of 19,70 and 42,91 and 1.46,26 respectively. She holds the current S.A. Records in the sprints with times of 18,73 and 41,78 . She was voted S.A.M.A. Female Athlete of the Year at the Awards Ceremony.
Salome Vermeulen from Gauteng North broke the S.A. Record in the 1500m with a time of 4.47.81, and almost broke the S.A. record for a 2nd time in the 800m with a winning time 2.19.2 within 2 weeks. Aged 46, she ran the best times in these events of all the age groups – 30 years plus !
