Durban will host the World 100 km

After the cancellation of the World Championship 100 km in Jeju (South Korea) the city of Durban (South Africa) will host the Championship of 100 km in October / November 2013. The date has to be confirmed.

About Masters Athletics in South Africa Athletics in South Africa was previously known as Veterans Athletics for men and women of 30 plus and has existed in South Africa since 1974 when the then S.A. Masters Athletic Association was founded by Danie Burger, ex-Springbok pole-vaulter, hurdler and decathlete, after a sojourn in the U.S.A. He was a physiotherapist / chiropractor who had studied and worked in the United States in the early 70's. At this time David Pain, an American Lawyer, organised a mile race for men of 40 plus, called masters. This concept caught on and in 1975 the first championships for veterans (or masters) took place in Toronto, Canada.  Wolfgang Ritte (60) begins potential record rampage with WR vault So it begins. Germany’s  Wolfgang “Wolfie” Ritte  has been a world champ and world record holder in the vault for years. Now he’s added to his legend with an M60 WR in the vault of 4.11 meters (13-5 3/4) in his first outdoor meet of the year,  according to World Masters Athletics.  He turned 60 in January. WMA says: “During the indoor-season Ritte … failed to better the indoor record of  John Altendorf  (Kamloops, 2010). However at the first outdoor competition (1 May) the German pole vaulter … improved the old record of Altendorf (USA) by seven centimeters.” It was a family affair at Wipperfürth: Ritte’s W60 wife, Ute, jumped 2.61 (8-6 3/4) and his M30 son Thomas cleared 4.81 (15-9 1/4).  Here’s the video ,  posted on Eurovets site. QUEEN OF MASTERS ROAD RUNNING - FRANCES VAN BLERK

Anyone who knows anything about Women’s Road Running in South Africa will know Frances van Blerk. She is not only a wellknown figure in Comrades circles, but has competed in every distance from 10km to 100km on  the road, and continues to grace our roads with her friendly personality and passion for running. Enige iemand wat iets van langafstandpadwedlope af weet, en veral die Comrades, sal die immergroen Frances van Blerk ken. Sy is alombekend in padwedloopsirkels, maar het haar ‘n klompie jare gelede by die Meestersgeledere ook aangesluit, en haar ook op die baan begewe. Sy het reeds aan ‘n hele klompie wereldmeesterskampioenskappe deelgeneem en in internasionale kompetisie haar uitstekend van haar taak gekwyt in die landloop, die halfmarathon, die marathon, die 5000m, 3000m en het ook reeds aan die 1500m deelgeneem!
