OLYMPIAN GREATS COMPETE IN MASTERS ATHLETICS, SOUTH AFRICA

IT WAS GREAT TO SEE 3 Olympian Greats, Shaun Bownes (47), Willem Coertzen (35) and Burger Lambrechts (45) who graced the track and field with their performances at the Central Gauteng Masters Championships in Germiston last Saturday.

Although in participating in two different age groups in the 110m hurdles, Shaun (45-49) ran 14,51 and Willem (35-39) ran 13,92 respectively which now places them both 1st on the World Masters Rankings for 2018 in their age groups. Although they ran in the same race, and the hurdle specs are the same, the age difference is what counts in the end. Shaun also raced in the 100m flat winning his age group with a time of 11.56.

Age Grps  Hurdle Height    Steps to 1st hurdle         Steps Betw hurdles     Dist to finish
30-49           0.991m               13.72m                              9.14m                         14.02m

Willem, Olympic Decathlete retired last year, but we hope to see him and Shaun and Burger at more masters meetings in future. Who knows maybe even at the World Masters Athletics Champs in Malaga Spain 4 – 16 September 2018! www.malaga2018.com

Burger Lambrecht (45) heaved the shotput with a throw of 17,88m (7.26kg) to better the S.A. record in his age group by more than 2 meters !  Two weeks ago, before his 45th birthday, Burger achieved 17,81m, which gives him 19,83m on the age-graded tables.
