WORLD MASTERS GAMES  In Sydney 2009 approx. 20 athletes from South Africa participated in the track & field events. They performed exceptionally well, and many of them came back with gold medals and a world record. Some of the most notable  were: Francios Maasdorp Men’s 30-34 Years 100m South Africa’s international track and field athlete Francois Maasdorp (30 years) won gold in the 100m in a time of 10.92 seconds. Francois represented South Africa in 2001 at the IAAF Grand Prix in Pretoria in the 200m and 400m events where he ran times of 20.91sec and 46.12 sec, respectively. Lucas Nel South Africa’s Lucas Nel, 86, was a crowd favorite and one of the sensations of the games. Lucus won gold in M85 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500m. In the 400m, he set a World Record of 1:20.47, besting the previous mark of 1:24.18. CENTRAL  GAUTENG                 MASTERS   ATHLETICS               NEWSFLASH NO. 5 Congratulations   -  our Walkers steal the limelight again !        Ranked Athlete Spotlight - Lesley van Buuren, RSA Masters Race Walking lured Lesley in 2004 when she joined a club so she could exercise with others.  Being exposed to the race walking technique for the first time encouraged Lesley to try the sport herself and she switched clubs in 2007 in order to be mentored and coached by the great Barbara Nell. 10 Gold and 3 Silver Medals in 3 WMA Championships plus many other accomplishments later, Lesley is now an inspiration to many herself (even if she inspires young athletes because they do not want to be beaten by an "old lady").
