MASTERS ATHLETES  can look forward to the next World Masters Track and Field and Road Walk championships in the Mediterranean city of Malaga, Spain next year from 5 - 16 September 2018.

In 2005, San Sebastian, Spain hosted a very successful world championships.   South Africans performed exceptionally well at these champs.

Its never too late to start planning or training !

About Masters Athletics in South Africa Athletics in South Africa was previously known as Veterans Athletics for men and women of 30 plus and has existed in South Africa since 1974 when the then S.A. Masters Athletic Association was founded by Danie Burger, ex-Springbok pole-vaulter, hurdler and decathlete, after a sojourn in the U.S.A. He was a physiotherapist / chiropractor who had studied and worked in the United States in the early 70's. At this time David Pain, an American Lawyer, organised a mile race for men of 40 plus, called masters. This concept caught on and in 1975 the first championships for veterans (or masters) took place in Toronto, Canada. South Africa was represented by 14 or 15 athletes and included well-known Springboks such as Burger himself, Fanie du Plessis (discus thrower), Anne McKenzie (800m, 1500m) and Willie Olivier (800m, 1500m, steeplechase) and Monty Hacker (100 & 200), previously secretary-general, vice-president and acting President of World...

MORE THAN 400 MASTERS ATHLETES CONVERGE ON PORT ELIZABETH THIS WEEKEND

STAR MASTERS ATHLETES OF YESTERYEAR, TODAY AND TOMORROW WILL SHOWCASE THEIR TALENTS IN PORT ELIZABETH THIS WEEKEND AT THE 39TH SOUTH AFRICAN MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS Several of these athletes were top senior athletes in their day, some of whom are still competing at senior level, and many others who have successfully moved into the masters ranks, breaking S.A. age group records and winning several medals at World Masters Championships as they advance through the age groups. CENTRAL  GAUTENG                 MASTERS   ATHLETICS               NEWSFLASH NO. 5 Congratulations   -  our Walkers steal the limelight again !        Ranked Athlete Spotlight - Lesley van Buuren, RSA Masters Race Walking lured Lesley in 2004 when she joined a club so she could exercise with others.  Being exposed to the race walking technique for the first time encouraged Lesley to try the sport herself and she switched clubs in 2007 in order to be mentored and coached by the great Barbara Nell. 10 Gold and 3 Silver Medals in 3 WMA Championships plus many other accomplishments later, Lesley is now an inspiration to many herself (even if she inspires young athletes because they do not want to be beaten by an "old lady").
