Masters hold their own at South African Track and Field Championships !
Masters athletes, Sunette Viljoen (32), Chris Harmse (43), Adri
Schoeman (44), Yolande van Aswegen (33), Tanya Treurnicht (31) and Marlize
Coetzee (39) excelled in their respective events at the recent S.A. Championships in Stellenbosch.
As expected Sunette and Chris won their javelin and hammerthrow events respectively. Sunette is currently one of the top javelin throwers in the world, and has qualified to compete at the World Championships in China in August.
Chris Harmse, S.A. record holder won his 20th open title with a heave of 71.98, and will be attempting to qualify for the World Championships in the remaining 2 track and field meetings - 9th May - S.A. Open and 15 & 16 May - S.A. Masters.
Adri Schoeman (past Olympian), who entered as an individual entry for province, progressed to the semi-finals in the 100m with a time of 12,38 (into strong headwind). In the 200m heats she ran 24,25 which bettered her own S.A. Masters record (W40-44) of 24,46 and finished 6th in the 200m final with a time of 24,48. She won both sprint titles in Brazil in 2013.
Tanya Treurnicht finished in the top 6 in the shotput, discus and hammerthrow, while Marlize Coetzee secured a 5th place in the hammerthrow.
With the exception of Sunette Viljoen, it is expected that all these athletes will be competing at the S.A. Masters Championships in Port Elizabeth in about 2 weeks time.
