MASTERS JUMPERS AND THROWERS AIM FOR NUMEROUS PB’s, MEDALS AND TITLES AT THE 20TH WORLD MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS (URL) IN PORTO ALEGRA, BRAZIL FROM 16 – 27 OCTOBER 2013.

MASTERS JUMPERS AND THROWERS AIM FOR NUMEROUS PB’s, MEDALS AND TITLES AT THE 20^TH WORLD MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN PORTO ALEGRA, BRAZIL FROM 16 – 27 OCTOBER 2013.

In the jump events, 8 men and ladies' athletes will be competing in the high jump, long jump and triple jump at the world championships.  Their best ever performances and rankings going into the championships could produce PB's, medals and even titles for South Africa.

High Jump

M 40-44                Johan Mans        1.84   ranked 2^nd in the entries.

M80-84                 Leo Benning       ranked 1st

Long Jump and Triple Jump

Vincent McBride (50-54) well known as a Triple jumper during the ‘80s makes a welcome return to athletics and will be competing in the Men’s long jump and triple jump.   He holds the age group record in the triple jump with 12.21m.

 

In his prime Vincent won the SA Senior and SA U.21 titles in the triple jump in 1983 with a PB of 15,93m.

Long jump Ladies

Stephanie Claassen (60-64)  ranks 3^rd with 3.98m and 3^rd in the heptathlon.

Toy Ungerer  (65-69) ranks 1^st with 4.14 m.   In 2012 ranked 4^th with 4.08m, and won a silver at the world championships in 2011.

17 of SA’s best masters athletes will be competing in the throwing events which are comprised of the individual events, namely - shotput, discus, javelin, hammer throw and weight throw, as well these same events which make up the throwing pentathlon which has become a very popular event worldwide, even at senior level.   The  athlete receives points for each discipline which then add a total number of points which determines the medal position.  This event is held separate from the individual throwing events.

The results in the different age groups tend to show a discrepancy in the distances of these events, which appears as if the older athletes  throw further due to the fact that the implements become smaller and lighter for the older age groups. (see implements above)

The weight throw is an adapted implement, a shorter wire and heavier version of the hammerthrow (also known as korthamer).  

The throwers take their events very seriously, some of whom hold various S.A. age group records and according to some of their rankings going into these championships, are looking at a number of PB’s, medals and even titles in the different events.

Shotput, discus, hammerthrow, weight throw, javelin and weight pentathlon

40-44 Johan Labuschagne – 15.62m ranked 2^nd and 4^th in the Discus (41.90) going into these championships 
40-44  Martin Venter 4^th 13,70m and takes top ranking in the hammer throw with 56.50m,  2^nd in the Weight throw, and 1^st in the weight pentathlon.  He holds 4 age group records.

45-49  Heleen Knobel ranks 2^nd in the weight pentathlon

55-59  Peter Knight Wattrus  ranked 3^rd in the shotput. And 5^th in the discus with 42.0m

50-54 Gawie Louw (holds 2 SA age group records) AND

55-59 Stephen Kitchenbrand (1 SA record) are ranked in the top 5 in the Javelin throw

60=64 Mercia Fereira  1^st going into the shoptut  9.97m and top 4 in the discus

75-79  Andrzej Rzepecki   3^rd  12.20m in the shotput and 2^nd in the hammerthrow, 1^st in the weight throw and weight pentathlon

He holds 10 South African age group records in all these events. He is also a former world record holder in the weight throw event in the Mens 65 -69 age group.   Top 2 ranked in weight pentathlon.

80-84  Leo Benning is ranked 1^st in the weight throw event.

The Italian Rado Carmelo (M 80) set two world records in the throws during a competition in Aosta (ITALY) on September 8:
Throw Pentathlon = 5.355 points and within this multi event a new world best in Discus = 39,46 m. (12.09.2013)

85-89 Borge Stannius  10.80 ranked 1^st in the shotput and top 3 in the discus and 1^st in the hammerthrow, top ranking in the weight throw and weight pentathlon and holds 16 S.A. age group records in all these events.
