There were a number of new Australian and Championship Records as well as a World Record to conclude the very successful championships. The existing 4x800m relay World Record of 11 minutes 47.30 set by a Dutch team in 2011 was convincingly shattered by an Australia W60 team consisting of Kathy Sims, Kathryn Heagney, Jeanette Flynn and Paula Moorehouse who, together, covered the distance in 11 minutes 22.59. The four women only had the opportunity to come together as a team at the Championships as they live in four totally different areas in Australia. For too long successful older women athletes have been largely ignored in mainstream newspapers but the tren

Kathy Martin mauls W60 world record in mile with stunning 5:42 (courtesy  www.masterstrack.com ) Hall of Famer Kathy Martin, 61, has won so many honors she almost ceases to surprise. She took the  10K at Olathe nationals in an American record 41:10.57 — 33 seconds better than the listed W60 best. No sweat. But that was but a warmup for her latest shocker. At Valley Stream North High School in Franklin Square, New York, she ran a mile Wednesday in 5:42.62. That’s the word from USATF Long Island Masters Chairman Rob Lemke. How good is 5:42? The listed W55 American record is 5:46.8. Rob graciously writes: “Kathy Martin beat the listed W60-64 World Record for the mile at a USATF-LI Summer Series meet. … The listed time is 5:48.94 by Gerda Van Kooten of the Netherlands in 1999. The listed American record is 5:57.39 by Marie Michelsohn in 2002. As Kathy is no stranger to record setting, I believe she got all the documentation she needs to have the record approved.

Liz Alexander (52) from South Africa won gold in the 800m for Women 50

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2ccSYQu8N0 Liz Alexander is one of those ‘wonder’ athletes who was not very competitive in athletics when she was younger.   She enjoyed sport in the form of road running, cycling, etc.   In 2001/2 she was introduced to Masters Athletics in her home province of KZN and started competing in the sprints, 400m and 800m.   Her best 800m time in the 45-49 age group was 2.26,6 in 2002.   It was only during the 2004/5 season that she started concentrating on the 800m and with hard work and dedication, continued to improve in her event. In 2005 she participated in the World Masters Championships in San Sebastian, Spain where she took the silver medal in one of the strongest 800m fields in the W.50 age group with an outstanding time of 2:21,84, which was also a national record.    Two years later in Riccione, Italy she went on to win the gold in the same age group with a time of 2.27,46 with a fantastic finish over the last 50m. She has 'retired'
